How to Have Beautiful and Healthy Curly Hair

When you have naturally curly hair, it can be hard to know exactly how to take care of it. In this post, we will share with you how you can have beautiful and healthy curly hair.

When I was younger, I had no clue how to style my curly hair. It took until I was 18 years old before I learned how to make it look decent, and 25 years old until I learned how to have thriving and healthy curly hair.

The first tip I can give you? STOP COLORING YOUR HAIR! From the ages of 15 to 25 I colored my hair like crazy. In fact, the first change I ever made to my hair was to get it bleached blonde. This ruined my hair for a time. It was super unhealthy, and it took nearly an hour just to brush through. Needless to say, it looked frizzy and was overall unmanageable. NEVER bleach your hair if you want healthy curls. If you must change your color, I recommend doing it naturally or using a color that washes out.

For ways to change your color the natural way (without using chemicals), click here.

healthy curly hair

Another tip I can give you is to make sure that you are not washing your curly hair daily. This can dry your hair and cause it to frizz. Instead, wash it every other day in order to not rinse out your hair’s natural oils.

After your shower and while your hair is still wet, apply just a little bit of product. I like to use a curl gel made by Herbal Essences. Even if you have long hair, all you need is a dime-sized amount, quarter-sized at best. The more product you put into your hair, the more bogged down and soggy it will appear. Run this through your hair using your fingers, and style it the way you would like in this way as well. If you can, avoid using a hairbrush or a comb. These items cause damage to your hair. If you must use a brush or a comb to untangle your strands, work from the bottom up.

Another way to have healthy curly hair is to avoid the use of straighteners and blow dryers. Heat can also dry out your hair and cause frizz and damage. The best thing you can do is to allow your hair to air-dry. But if you really need dry hair right away, aim your blow dryer slightly down when you use it so the heat travels down the hair shaft. This will minimize damage and frizz.

So if you have naturally curly hair, you can absolutely score beautiful curls that are healthy and bouncy. These are the tips that I have learned over a lifetime of trying to tame my hair, and I have never had better hair than now. So give them a try!

Will Sodium Cause Weight Gain?

When it comes to reaching a healthy weight, it’s a well-known fact that keeping up a balanced and fresh diet as well as an exercise regimen is the best way to reach your goals. But even when you think you are doing everything correctly, there could still be little things present in your diet that contribute to your progress slowing down. What about sodium? Can foods that contain sodium cause you to slow down with your weight loss, or even cause weight gain? In this post, we will dive into this topic.

Will sodium cause weight gain?
Is sodium present in your diet causing you to gain weight?

The Truth About Sodium and Weight Gain

Sodium, or salt, will not cause a person to gain weight in and of itself. However, that doesn’t mean that taking in excess sodium will not show itself in some way. An excess of sodium causes the body to hold onto extra fluid. This will show on the scale and cause measurements to go up rather than down like you want them to when you are working hard to lose weight. However, when you get sodium levels back to normal in your diet, this water retention will subside. Keep in mind that cutting back on salt will only cause you to lose this water weight, not fat.

Will sodium cause weight gain?
Foods that are high in sodium often contain high amounts of fat and sugar as well.

While sodium alone does not cause weight gain, or weight gain due to fat, foods that contain large amounts of sodium are usually made up of sugar and fat that can cause this type of weight gain. Think of the salty foods that you may eat from time to time. Items like chips, cookies, fast food meals, and other processed snacks do contain salt, but they contain other components that are not beneficial to weight loss as well. If you are regularly eating these foods, you very well may be experiencing weight gain that is excess fat on your body. But it would not be wise to blame the sodium alone.

Staying Healthy and On Track

If you are hoping to lose weight, but your progress has slowed or stopped altogether, make sure that you are not getting excess sodium in your diet. If you are gaining weight, getting your intake back to normal will help you to start losing fat as well as water retention that could be caused by salty food. Drinking lots of water can also help to flush your system as well as cut down on bloating and swelling that sodium can contribute to.

Will sodium cause weight gain?
Keeping your sodium intake at a normal amount will help you to stay on track.

You also owe it to your heart and kidneys to keep your sodium intake at a normal level. Excess fluid puts pressure on the blood vessels, and this can cause the kidneys to have to work harder. Also, a high amount of sodium in the body can lead to high blood pressure and damage to the arteries. So you owe it to yourself to stay healthy by cutting out excess sodium and keeping up a balanced and healthy diet.

Tomato and Cucumber Sandwich

This recipe (the first one we are posting to Whimsy Wellness!) is super easy, highly delicious, and great for those who are following a vegan or vegetarian diet. We give you the tomato and cucumber sandwich!

Tomato and cucumber sandwich ingredients.
Yummy natural ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • Tomato slices
  • Cucumber slices
  • Mayonnaise or Veganaise
  • Bread slices (we recommend whole wheat)
  • Black pepper

This recipe requires no baking or cooking. You are just whipping up a highly delicious sandwich!

Take a clean plate, and lay your slices of bread next to each other. Thinly spread mayonnaise or veganaise on both slices. Next, layer as many cucumber and tomato slices on each piece of bread that you like. What I like to do is on one slice of bread place tomato on the top and cucumber on the bottom. Then on the next slice, place the tomato on the bottom and the cucumber above this. That way, there will be a taste of both tomato and cucumber present in each bite.

Before you push your pieces of bread together, sprinkle some black pepper on each (to taste). Then, your sandwich is complete!

This is a favorite of mine and an excellent choice for lunch or a midnight snack. It’s also a great option for those who are vegans and vegetarians. Just be sure to use the right -naise! 😉

The Best Way to Achieve Weight Loss

In this post, we’re going to share with you some tips when it comes to losing weight the healthy way. And when we say “healthy way”, we mean making small changes in lifestyle that deliver big results – not achieving weight loss via fad dieting. So if you are ready to reach a healthier, slimmer you, read on!

Healthy ways to achieve weight loss.
Healthy and fresh food, like the peach, can help weight loss.

Make Changes to the Food You Eat

Surely you have heard the phrase, “you are what you eat.” And while none of us are burgers or grilled cheese sandwiches, this statement does hit home. What we choose to fuel our body with impacts not only how we perform throughout our day, but how we feel, how we look, and our overall health. With this in mind, it’s important to make sure that what we are putting into our bodies makes us the best people possible.

Take a look at what you are eating on a regular basis now. We live in an age of fast food, meals that are convenient but highly processed, full of fat and calories, yet not so high in nutrition. And restaurant meals are served in large portions, meaning that if you eat every bite you are getting way more than you actually need. And overeating will lead to fat storage on your body, as well as other potential health problems. So if you regularly eat out, whether via fast food or at restaurants, can you limit how much you do this moving forward? Or if your lifestyle does not allow for you to limit the meals you eat out of the house, can you make healthier choices, or commit to setting aside part of your meal to eat later? You’ll be amazed at how these steps can help when it comes to losing weight.

What should you be eating when it comes to health and successful weight loss? We at Whimsy Wellness understand that not everyone has the same dietary needs. Some individuals suffer from food allergies, some must be careful what they eat due to illness, and others simply prefer to stick to one diet or another (such as a vegan or vegetarian diet). Whatever you are able to eat, it’s important to get fresh, healthy food into your day. Fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean meat if you choose to eat meat is a great way to go. You can absolutely get the protein that you need each day without eating meat if you choose to go this route. If you do eat meat, we recommend grass fed.

food for weight loss
Edamame – an excellent source of protein.

For a list of meatless proteins for vegetarians and vegans, click here.

Another thing to keep in mind is that drinks can add a lot of empty calories. Soda, sugary coffees, and even fruit juices should be limited, if not avoided completely. In fact, replacing juice with the actual fruit can help you to lose weight. Substituting orange juice for an actual orange will save you approximately 45 calories.

The best way to quench thirst is to drink water. If you don’t like the taste of plain water, there are ways to enhance it, such as adding in fresh fruit. Not only will you be adding to your body’s health and hydration, you will be saving yourself a ton of calories.

Watch How Much You Eat

Another way to make sure you are on the track to weight loss is to take in the correct amount of calories. We recommend seeing your primary healthcare provider to get an assessment of your health and caloric intake needs. But the way that it works is if you take in the same amount of calories each day that you are using, you will stay the same weight. It takes 3500 calories to gain a pound, and it takes the same amount of calories to be burned in order to lose a pound. When you do the math, you can lose 1 pound in 1 week by ending the day with 500 calories less than you take in.

Say you need 2,000 calories per day in order to stay the same weight that you currently are. In order to lose 1 pound of fat per week, aim to eat 1,750 calories per day (taking in healthy and fresh food, of course). Supplement this with burning 250 calories each day via exercise. This is a healthy way to slim down to your ideal weight.

Fitting in fitness for weight loss.
Getting active as much as you can contribute to successful weight loss.

Fit In Fitness

Exercising is not always easy. Most of us have so many obligations to tend to throughout the day that when we do have some free time, we want to hit the couch or bed and relax rather than get active. However, the best results are achieved by those who find time to fit in fitness.

There are many ways to get in some exercise throughout the day. For example, if you work close to your home, why not walk to work if it is safe for you to do so? Or ride a bike? This burns more calories than riding to work in a vehicle. If you do drive to work, parking farther away from the building will help you to squeeze in more steps than parking close. If you find yourself in a building where there are stairs and elevators, take the stairs. Making small changes like this will add up big time when it comes to getting more active.

If you can’t afford a gym membership, no problem. There are tons of other ways that you can get active, many of them for free. YouTube is an excellent place to find free workout videos. You can use these videos to get in shape from the comfort of your home if that’s what appeals to you. Also, you can take up an active hobby such as hiking or rock climbing. These two are favorites of mine. You can end up having so much fun seeing the sights of nature or exploring rock surfaces, natural or in a gym, that you forget you are actually working your body.

Successful weight loss.
Weight loss is made easy when you join a class or enlist the help of a buddy.

Grab a Workout Buddy or Join a Class

It’s much easier to achieve weight loss when you aren’t doing everything by yourself. If you know someone who is also hoping to reach their goal weight, or who enjoys keeping up a healthy lifestyle, why not join forces with them so that you both are able to stay on track? You may find that staying active is much more fun when you have someone to share your time with.

If you have the ability, joining a class is also a great way to reach your goals. You and your workout buddy can go and learn in a group setting while getting in some excellent exercise. Something I enjoyed was joining a yoga class with a close friend in Asheville, North Carolina, and being in a class helped me to stay on target with my fitness goals.

Blueberries for weight loss.
Blueberries contribute to a slimmer figure and successful weight loss.

BONUS – Foods That Contribute to a Flat Belly

  • Lemons
  • Blueberries
  • Avocados
  • Hard-boiled Eggs
  • Grapefruit
  • Almonds
  • Celery
  • Salmon
  • Watermelon
  • Quinoa
  • Green Tea
  • Pineapple
  • Beets
  • Chicken
  • Kale Chips
  • Cherries
  • Bananas
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Butternut Squash
  • Cranberries
  • Flax Seed

Losing weight takes a little bit of work, but it is not nearly as difficult as some people say. Use the tips laid out in this article to lose weight the best and healthiest way possible. Good luck!

Natural Treatment for Rhinitis Medicamentosa (Rebound Nasal Congestion)

In this post, I’m going to share with you how my boyfriend and I beat rhinitis medicamentosa the natural way. For those of you who are not sure, “rhinitis medicamentosa” refers to rebound nasal congestion caused by the overuse of nasal sprays that contain decongestants (think Afrin). While at first the nasal spray feels like a godsend, over time the person using the spray finds that they cannot breathe through their nose without it. In time, the spray stops working like it used to, meaning the person will need to spray the decongestant into their nose more frequently in order to breathe clearly. This causes a vicious cycle of purchase and use to breathe normally. This was us for a time, but it doesn’t have to be you! Use this list of natural treatment for rhinitis medicamentosa to bust this cycle in half.

natural treatment for rhinitis medicamentosa
Soon problems breathing through the nose will be a thing of the past!

Saline

My boyfriend and I got hooked on an off-brand of nasal decongestants back in February. This was because of a terrible flu that hit our area that made it impossible to breathe through the nose. Personally, I cannot sleep while breathing through my mouth. It just won’t happen. So I ended up losing a lot of sleep which made me really cranky. It didn’t help that I was newly pregnant and was carting around extra blood in my system (rebound congestion is caused by blood flooding your nose after the decongestant has worn off). So we bought nasal spray, and instantly got hooked on it.

After a time, we started looking into natural treatment for rhinitis medicamentosa, and one of the best that I have found so far is saline. We personally purchase ours from the Dollar Tree for one dollar. Saline is simply salt, chlorine, and water. My boyfriend and I started using saline once or twice per day to rinse our nasal passages, and we also began diluting our regular nasal spray with it in order to start a weaning process.

To do a saline rinse in your nasal passages, squirt the saline into your nose and let it sit for a second. Then blow your nose. Do this with both nostrils.

When it comes to dilution, simply mix some of the normal nasal spray with saline and use this instead. It will cut down on how much of the decongestant you are getting, allowing you to wean off. But trust me, you will still feel open and be able to breathe even though you are getting a smaller dose. Gradually mix less and less spray with more and more saline in order to wean off successfully.

Steam from a shower or bath can work wonders on your nose.

Steam and Essential Oils

When you are feeling clogged, it’s so tempting to reach for the nasal spray, but there is another trick up your sleeve that you can use to clear up and get away from the vicious cycle that is nasal spray use/addiction. Simply jump in the shower or bath and allow the steam to drift up into your nasal passages. I personally like to add a few drops of essential oil to create an extra punch. My favorite is peppermint oil. Peppermint oil is known for its ability to help you unclog and breathe better, sometimes immediately. I’ve definitely found this to be true, and when you can breathe better without nasal spray you no longer feel tempted to use it.

Going Cold Turkey

This isn’t something I personally have tried because I simply lack the self-control to do it. My boyfriend quit the nasal spray cold turkey, however, and after just a few days was able to breathe again just fine. Make no mistake, it will NOT be easy. You will feel tempted to use your spray, and even if you are able to power through it, you will be super stuffy for a little bit of time. For my boyfriend, it was two days. But keep in mind that relief is just ahead, and soon you won’t have to worry about breathing normally and your little nose will be healthy again.

I wanted to share what worked for my boyfriend and myself because we were hooked on nasal sprays for six months. We’re talking daily use, sometimes up to once per hour. It got terrible. Personally, my nose was dry, sore, and bled often. But we decided to do something about our rebound nasal congestion, and we succeeded! I was even able to quit the use of nasal sprays while being pregnant and having much more blood than normal running through my body. So give these methods a try and see if natural treatment for rhinitis medicamentosa works for you.

The Benefits of Peppermint Essential Oil

Essential oils are highly beneficial for a variety of reasons. One of my favorite essential oils is peppermint. It smells great, and provides the user with wonderful benefits to the mind and body, like the ones we will discuss here today.

peppermint essential oil
The lovely peppermint plant.
  • Peppermint essential oil is excellent for those who need a natural pick-me-up in the morning. When you need some energy, simply sniff your bottle of peppermint oil. Using peppermint oil in this way may also help you to be able to focus better on the tasks you need to tackle during your day.
  • Another wonderful way to use peppermint essential oil is a massage oil addition. It is a natural muscle relaxant and pain killer, making it perfect for those times you want to relax. It can also be used to help ease headaches. Sniff your bottle, or rub a few drops on your temples to alleviate headaches when they arise.
  • Care for the sinuses! Those who suffer from allergies, rebound congestion from using nasal sprays too much, or individuals dealing with the cold or flu should break out their peppermint oil ASAP. Add a few drops to your diffuser and inhale this in order to unclog your sinuses. Something else you can do is boil some water, add peppermint oil to it, and then lean your head over the bowl with a towel over your head to trap the steam. Breathe this in.
  • Peppermint essential oil is great for those who are looking to slim down, as it can be used as a natural way to curb hunger. To get the most out of peppermint oil for weight loss, add a few drops to your diffuser and inhale this during meal times. If you can’t use the oil in this way, a few drops rubbed onto your wrist or your chest should be sufficient.
  • Feeling itchy? Peppermint oil is beneficial for those who are dealing with poison ivy, rashes, etc. Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to coconut oil and rub this onto your skin, or mix peppermint oil with lavender oil and apply this mixture. This should help to soothe and cool down itchy, inflamed skin.
  • One of the best benefits of using peppermint oil? It’s ability to act as a natural fever reducer. This is especially useful for those who have children and would prefer to treat them naturally. Mix peppermint and coconut oil together and place this mixture on the feet and neck of the individual dealing with the fever. This is an excellent alternative to over-the-counter medications such as aspirin.
  • Peppermint oil is not only great for you, it’s an excellent product that keeps bugs away from your home. Insects such as spiders, ants, ticks, mosquitos, and lice really don’t care for peppermint oil, so we recommend sprinkling some along windows and doorways and other places where these pests could get inside. Not only will you see fewer intruders, your home will smell great!
  • Peppermint essential oil is antimicrobial, which makes it an excellent addition to DIY skin care products and a natural alternative to acne medications.
  • Sunburned from the summer rays? Mix some peppermint oil with coconut oil and slather this onto your burned skin. The cooling effects of peppermint will help to relieve the pain that you are feeling and promote the speedy recovery of your skin.

I personally love peppermint oil and think it should be in everyone’s collection of natural remedies. Rub the oil onto your wrist, diffuse it, or even take it in capsule form to enjoy the benefits that it provides. Or if you would like, run a warm bath and add a few drops to it to enhance it and relax in style.

Homemade Facial Scrub Review, Plus How to Make!

A few weeks ago, I decided that I wanted to try making my own facial scrub. The reason why is I have been buying facial scrubs from the store for years, but have never been completely impressed with them. So I did, and in this post, I want to share my thoughts on how it turned out, as well as how to make this homemade facial scrub.

homemade facial scrub

First, I will tell you how I made this scrub. It’s super easy to make. I used a large bowl to mix with, and placed 1 cup of iodized salt in the bowl, along with 1/2 cup of melted coconut oil. I am a HUGE fan of coconut oil, especially when it comes to skin care.

For 10 wonderful ways that you can use coconut oil, click here.

homemade facial scrub

I mixed the scrub until it was a nice, creamy consistency, and then I added a few drops of cypress essential oil. It smells nice and forest-like, and it’s an excellent addition to DIY skin care products due to its ability to promote blood flow and limit breakouts of acne. If you don’t have cypress essential oil on hand, I suggest using either tea tree oil or lemon oil.

After this all got mixed together, I placed the homemade facial scrub in a clean jar and jumped in the shower to try it out. I recommend using a fresh popsicle stick each time you scoop some of your scrub in order to keep what’s left in the jar sanitary.

homemade facial scrub
Tea tree oil is an excellent addition to your homemade scrub, as is cypress oil or lemon oil.

Once I got in the shower, I washed my face, and then it was time to exfoliate. I grabbed a quarter-size amount of scrub and applied it to my face, making sure to focus on the oily sections (forehead, nose, chin).

As for what I think of this homemade facial scrub, I love it! I am truly impressed with how it turned out. It’s definitely gritty, which is what you need to get great exfoliation. The salt melts easily in water, however, so it’s not hard to wash off once you are ready to rinse your skin.

Once you rinse, the coconut oil will leave your skin deeply moisturized, which is excellent. I find that on the days I use my scrub (you should use it twice per week only) I do not have to moisturize after my shower, which saves me some time.

So if you are interested in trying this homemade facial scrub, I highly recommend it. It’s excellent! I believe you will find that it works better than store-bought scrubs.

How to Enjoy a Healthy Relationship – Part Two

In the first part, we talked about finding a healthy relationship and how to be a fantastic partner to attract a fantastic partner. In this part, we will talk about how to enjoy a relationship that you have already been in for some time/a relationship that can thrive forever.

a healthy relationship

Communicate Well

It’s no secret that to enjoy a relationship that thrives, each partner has to be able to communicate. While you cannot force your partner to communicate with you, you can choose how you speak to them, and in what manner.

When we talk about communicating, we mean being willing to let your feelings be known to your partner. When we say communicating well, we mean knowing how to express your feelings in a productive way. It’s important not to bottle your feelings up. Your partner deserves to know how you are feeling and how they can help, if they are able to. At times, they can simply serve as a listening ear. But be sure to express yourself in such a way that your partner does not go on the defensive. Shouting and using insults is not productive, and can place a wedge between yourself and your loved one. If you are angry, perhaps you should give yourself some time to cool down so that when you do speak with your partner, you grow closer together rather than further apart.

a healthy relationship

Do Things Together Often

It’s easy to start a relationship. It’s not always easy to keep one alive. You don’t want to just be with someone. You want to spend your days with someone that you love and enjoy being with.

One way to enjoy a healthy relationship is to do things together as a couple, and do things often. Even if you both have busy schedules, make time each day for each other. Enjoy a delicious breakfast together before going to work, or arrange to eat lunch together during your break if your jobs are in close proximity. On your days off, go out for walks together or visit a museum or coffee shop. The point is to make sure that you are taking time each day to visit with your loved one and spend quality time with them to help your relationship thrive.

a healthy relationship

Be Willing to Compromise

Every couple, no matter how compatible, will be different in some way. We all come from different backgrounds. We were all raised in a unique way to become the adults we are today. This means that some of us are going to like certain things, and some of us are not. It can be something small, such as you loving Mexican food but your partner hating it. Or it can be something a little bigger, such as you having a certain religious belief that your partner does not agree with. If the differing opinions and beliefs are small enough to you both that it is something you can live with as a couple, then you will find yourself having to compromise from time to time.

A large part of being willing to compromise is caring about your partner and respecting them enough to put them first. And of course, your partner should be willing to compromise for you. It’s up to you as a couple to decide how you compromise. For example, if you want Mexican food, and your partner wants Greek food, you may decide that Italian food is where you come together. Or you may compromise by getting Mexican food one night, and Greek food the next. Either way, showing your partner that you are willing to put your own desires aside from time to time lays the foundation for a truly happy and healthy relationship.

One word about compromise: being willing to compromise for your partner is a two-way street. This is a part of the relationship where equality comes into the picture. One person should not do all the compromising. If your partner regularly puts their wants and needs aside for you, but you never reciprocate, this is not healthy. The same is true if you regularly compromise but your loved one does not. This scenario can lead to resentment, which can, in turn, cause the relationship to become unhealthy and unstable.

Be Trustworthy and Faithful

You cannot have a healthy relationship with someone if there is no trust. In fact, trust is one of the most crucial parts of a healthy relationship. When your partner puts their trust in you, accept their trust as a precious gift. Not everyone trusts easily. Your partner may have had to get to know you for some time before they became able to trust you. So be someone who is trustworthy, and do not take their faith in you for granted. Trust can be shattered in one moment, and if you are lucky enough to get their trust back, it may take weeks, months, even years.

One way to be a trustworthy person is to be faithful. Obviously, a relationship cannot be healthy if one or both partners have a wandering eye. If your partner is not loyal and faithful to you, you are not with the right person. If you are not loyal and faithful to your partner, you are keeping them from finding a healthy relationship.

Include Affection and Intimacy in Your Relationship

There is nothing so healing as an embrace from your partner. In fact, their touch can turn any bad day around. If you want to enjoy a healthy relationship, regularly include affection and intimacy in your daily life with your loved one. Hold their hand when you walk down the street. Give them a hug and kiss before you leave each other for work. Go to sleep cuddling them. Be affectionate for any reason at all. This will show your love for each other and keep you each happy in your relationship.

If you want your relationship to thrive, you need to do your part to keep the relationship healthy. On the other hand, you cannot be the only partner doing the things that we discussed in this article. If your partner is also doing these things, congratulations! You are truly blessed in the love department. If they are not, sit them down and talk with them about what you would like to see from them. Never accept a situation that is not healthy. You are worth more than that.

Meatless Proteins for Vegetarians and Vegans

A common concern for vegetarians and vegans is being able to get enough protein to stay healthy while keeping a plant-based diet. So in this post, we will share with you some meatless proteins that you can enjoy while staying away from animal products.

How much protein should you eat per day? While men and women need different amounts (and you should speak with your physician or nutritionist in order to know for sure how much you personally need), aim for between 40 and 45 grams per day.

proteins for vegetarians

Whole Almonds

One way to get a decent amount of protein is to eat delicious whole almonds. 1/4 of a cup buys you 7.56 grams. While you want to get your protein from a variety of different sources each day, one serving of almonds really helps you put a dent in your daily quota. Whole almonds are also an excellent snack to take with you on the go, so be sure to stock up.

proteins for vegetarians

Prepared Edamame

Ready to get nearly half of your daily protein needs in one sitting? One cup of prepared edamame boasts 18.46 grams of it. So if you enjoy this tasty treat, go fill up, because it’s mega good for your protein needs.

proteins for vegetarians

Boiled Black Beans

Beans, beans, good for your heart. And great for loading up on protein, as it would turn out! One cup will give you 15.24 grams, which covers approximately 1/3 of the total protein that you need in one day.

Beans, in general, are great when it comes getting adequate amounts of protein. If you don’t care for black beans, you can substitute them with a cup of pinto beans (again, boiled), adzuki beans, or white beans. A serving of each will provide you with over 10 grams of protein.

Peanut Butter

One of my favorite lunches consists of a peanut butter sandwich and a side of fruit. I don’t know why I am crazy about pure peanut butter on a sandwich, but it’s really really delicious. And the good thing about peanut butter is that it also is a great way to get protein as a vegetarian or a vegan. One serving (two tablespoons) will give you 8 grams.

Quinoa

Quinoa has more (and better) protein that is found in most grains. Because of this, it is an excellent source of protein for vegetarians and vegans. One serving is one cup, in which you can find 8 grams of protein.

Seeds

Another meatless protein that is a great choice for snacking is seeds. And there are a variety of seeds to choose from. A 1/4 serving of sunflower seeds, for instance, will give you roughly 7 grams of protein.

As you can see, there are many delicious options when it comes to meatless proteins for vegetarians and vegans. Other sources of protein include lentils, tempeh, spirulina, and avocado (although they are certainly not all!) Play around with different combinations of meatless proteins in order to get all of the grams you need each day to stay healthy.

How to Engage in “Paying it Forward”

One of the best ways to reach inner peace and total fulfillment is to selflessly help others when we can, and be kind and positive people in general. We have all heard of “paying it forward.” Now we just have to put it into practice! In this post, we will discuss some ways that we can help those in need whether we have money to give or not.

Animals need consideration and help too.

Give to Animals

I’m going to start out by talking about our furry friends. Too often animals are abused and left out in the world to fend for themselves. So why not help in any way that you can? Animals deserve good homes, delicious and nutritious food, and humans that will love them and take great care of them. If you have the ability, adopt a homeless animal. If you cannot, find a home for them. And never tolerate animal abuse if you see it happening.

Can you spare a few dollars to share a meal?

Share a Meal

One of the basic human needs is food. Everyone needs to eat, and everyone DESERVES to eat. Food brings people together and can help lift the spirits of those who are feeling broken.

One way that you can pay it forward and help someone in need is to bring them a meal. It doesn’t matter if it is home-cooked or store-bought. It doesn’t matter if you spend $5 dollars on it or 50 cents. In fact, you don’t even need to give money up to make a difference. Not everyone has the ability to get food for themselves, and when you can help, help.

An example of someone that is in need of food is a homeless person. Not everyone who lacks a home is a “bum”, or someone who does not want to work or is hooked on drugs or alcohol. Many people are afraid to give homeless persons money, but if you still want to give, give food. A sandwich and a bottled drink can make all the difference in the world to a homeless individual. Again, if you can help, help.

I have shown you in all things that by working hard in this way, you must assist those who are weak and must keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus, when he himself said: ‘There is more happiness in giving than there is in receiving.’” – Acts 20:35

Make Someone’s Day With a Gift

There is nothing better than seeing a smile light up someone’s face because of something we have done or said. Giving isn’t done because we want any glory or recognition, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t make us feel good to be kind to others.

A great way to make someone’s day is to surprise them with flowers, a card, a love note, or any special gift for no reason at all. Just because we want to. Great recipients for a gift like this? Kids. Elderly ones. Parents. Significant others. Friends. Anyone! You can even bring home a special treat for Fido if you like.

We can also do something kind to light up a stranger’s day. If you regularly rent movies from Redbox, why not slip a $5, $10, $20 dollar bill in the case when you return the movie? Or a nice note, gift card, etc.? If you are eating in a restaurant, why not anonymously pay another family’s bill? You never know who really is in need of a pick-me-up. Just from personal experience, one time my boyfriend and I were very broke and we couldn’t afford to get food. We were worried about how we would be able to eat that day. While we were out in public, a man stopped my boyfriend and handed him a $20.00 bill. I still can’t figure out why he did that, but we were extremely grateful. Because of the kindness of a stranger, we were able to buy food. When you have the ability to give to someone, even if you don’t know who they are, you never know just how much of a difference you are making.

Give support to those who need it.

Be a Shoulder to Lean On

Making a difference in someone’s life can simply mean being there for them when they need you to be. We all go through struggles in life. Even if you can’t change the situation of someone who is going through a time of struggle, you can be a shoulder to lean on and a listening ear. Not everyone needs to be fixed. Some may just need to feel loved and to know they are not alone. You would be surprised how much of a relief it can be to receive a hug, or even a smile, when hope seems lost.

Paying it forward is so easy to do, but not done by as many people today as it should be. As the famous quote reads, “be the change you want to see in the world.” Life isn’t always easy, and because of this, it’s important for us to look out for each other and help those who need it. One good deed at a time makes the world a better place for all of us. So let’s practice paying it forward, and be a force for positivity and good. It will truly help us to reach innner peace if we do so.
